Introduction

 

What would our population look like if the Black Death still existed? The Black Death was a deadly disease that killed millions in Europe between 1346-1352. The Black Death could potentially have a more severe catastrophic effect on the human population, worse than coronavirus.  In this speech I will be talking about the history of the black death, how it is transmitted, the symptoms, the deaths and how to keep it under control.

History

The Black Death originated from infected fleas in the early 1300s. The Black Death struck Europe and Asia in October 1347. It came to Europe when 12 ships from the Black Sea docked at Sicilian port of Messina. People gathered on the docks to surprise their loved ones but were met with a horrific discovery.  When they checked on board the ship they found that most of the sailors were dead and the ones who weren't were gravely ill and had black boils all over their skin that  oozed pus and blood.

Transmission

The Black Death was transmitted by an infected flea that was mainly on rats. Then when rats and humans would make contact the flea would give the disease to the human. Then humans transmitted through human coughing. When the flea went onto the animals they would die soon after. People thought it was the pets like dogs and cats that transmitted the disease. So they removed all cats and dogs and left the rats which really were the main source of the disease. Then the rats would run around the streets with the infected fleas on them giving the disease to humans without them knowing. There are still cases of the black death today.

Symptoms

Some symptoms you would have if you got the Black Death are pain in the abdomen and muscles, extreme weakness, cough blood, nausea and vomiting. That's some of the worst ones. That's only some of them, there are still many more symptoms you could have. It would have been much worse back then because their medical antibiotics weren't as effective as they are now.

Deaths

The Black Death caused a lot of damage to the places affected by it. It killed an estimated 25 million people in Europe. You would think since there were so many deaths that they wouldn't have funerals but actually the people that died were buried in the traditional way at normal cemeteries. The reason for this is because they wanted life to carry on as normal as possible.

How to keep it under control

You can prevent getting exposed to the black death by filling in holes and gaps in your house so rats and mice can't get in. Clean your yard. Always use gloves when touching wildlife dead or alive. You could also go and get the vaccine.

Conclusion 

In conclusion, now that you know more about the black death I want to ask you a question. What do you think our population would look like if the black death made a return.

My name is Brayden. The origin of my name is that it comes from the Irish name Braden. The meaning of my name is bould, brave or wise. Some famous people with the name Brayden are: Brayden Schenn a famous Hockey Player who plays for the St Louis Blues and Brayden Turner, a famous actor most well known for his movies that include: “Grimm” and “ Different Drums”.  My Mum chose my name because my uncle has the same name and she just really liked the name “Brayden”. So that's how I got my name.

I created this avatar because I think it is really cool that my avatar is all white. At first I was going to do one that looked like me. But then the teacher said I could make it look like whatever I wanted it to look like. I didn't choose to make it look like me because i don't like what i look like so i went with something completely different. Also people wouldn't be able to tell it's me. The website i used to create my avatar is called My Blue Robot

My Favorite Book

My favorite book isn't just one book, it's a whole series called the treehouse series. It's about two friends who created a treehouse with 13 levels. Every book they add another 13 levels to the previous amount. I enjoy reading at home in my bed while it is raining. The last time I read a good book was today. It's a book called I Hunt killers by Barry Lyga. I don't have any advice for people struggling with reading.

My Strengths

Curiosity is one of my strengths. An example of curiosity would be if i see something on the internet i would want to go and try it. Gratitude is another strength I have. This means I am very grateful for everything I have. I would be happy with anything you give me even though I might not show it.

My Treasures

Some of the most important things to me are my Mum, Pop, and Nana. They are really important to me because they always look after me and if I need help with something they would come and help me. They will find time to do stuff with me even though their lives are quite busy.

A Bad Memory

One day when i was at my friend's birthday party I was playing on the trampoline with him. Then I fell backwards through the net and hit my head on a really hard piece of wood and split my head open.

A Good Memory

I played in a 13th grade football tournament. We won all our games apart from two. We drew one and we lost one. We ended up coming second and I scored 5 goals in the whole tournament.

Relatives

I enjoy visiting my Uncle Patrick and Auntie Anne. They live out in Rolleston. The reason I like visiting them is because my uncle Patrick plays video games just like me and I enjoy being able to play with him.  I also enjoy art and my Auntie Anne is really good at it.

The Future

When I grow up I want to become an electrician because I don't really like talking to people so I will be under the ground and the roof a lot of the time. Also if i ever build my own house i could do the electrasions job which will save me money.
